Thank you for your response.
Given the undertones of your comment I wonder if you think the original question I posed is a legit question for a person to have?
Since you invoke HN I find it interesting how there is often a hostility toward inquiry by commenters like you. What’s the justification? Am I inexcusably lazy or maliciously operating in bad faith. Is it a crime to ask a question on a message board if it can be answered through google queries?
If this was conversation in real life would you dismiss a person who might have asked the same question and tell them they should take out their phones out and answer their own questions with google?
Anyhow, my stake in the topic is limited. I read the article, read the comments and found a position on erosion surprising so I asked a question. Not sure if this necessitates me seeking the fine institutes you’ve enumerated but maybe one day I will find myself in need of a deeper knowledge so thank you.
- defrost 2y ago> if you think the original question I posed is a legit question for a person to have? Some self inquiry and reflection on whether a global average is a useful metric for erosion, gold in the crust, pesticide toxins in food, etc. might be worthwhile. Such average are generally so low that they convey little of use, what is more useful are geospatial type distributions; where there is (above some threshold) gold, toxins, or erosion, how much is there and how is it distributed over the threshold? > Is it a crime to ask a question No. > If this was conversation in real life would you dismiss a person who might have asked the same question I wouldn't dismiss them and I haven't dismissed you, evidenced by this reply. (I must warn you though that HN is not meant for length back and forth conversations and I literally have to scroll back pages in my comment history to see your replies .. so, hopefully I catch and answer any further replies you make). > and tell them they should take out their phones out and answer their own questions with google? I would wonder why they expect me to do their heavy lifting .. was it really neccesary for you to ask where Maryland was mentioned in an article when you have Ctrl-F search and can see the context of the threaded comments? > read the comments and found a position on erosion surprising And responded by low balling the real and actual concerns of somebody who paid attention to local erosion and delibrately purchased a house back from the water .. by suggesting that you figured it was less than a few millimetres a year you implied they were foolish to be concerned. A more reflective take might have been to guess that perhaps you knew less about erosion than the the person you responded to.
- DSingularity 2y agoSorry, the original question I posed (and was attacked for) was not an ctrl-F type question about Maryland but about whether this was a serious problem. My response to the flaming was to defend myself. Nonetheless, I can see how my original question came off as dismissive but I assure you I was sincerely shocked that someone was had a position that is anyone who buys property close to the ocean is making a mistake and that drove my question. I appreciate your response. I keep learning how hard it is to engage with people via text based interfaces. You have to put relatively significant effort to both ensure you are not misunderstood and that you do not misunderstand. Maybe this is the killer app of GPT :). Have a nice day!
