Ammonia is amazing. I have always used it to cycle any new aquarium. The nitrogen cycle. The theory is that by adding small amounts of ammonia to fresh water it slowly develops Nitrites and Nitrates creating an eco climate perfect for fish and plants. Off the top of my head you initially develop Nitrites and then the Nitrates take over. This is when the water is ready for the introduction of your fish. Of course you need proper filtration to keep the system going
