My Harlan Ellison anecdote comes from trying to a get a book signed. My friend, S, had a “signed” Ellison book. My other friend, G, was going to try and get it signed at a local convention. Finally tracking Harlan down, my friend saw his chance. Harlan was talk to another gentleman, but my friend pushed his way in and talked to Ellison. “I signed 5000 of these fucking things!”, he cried. “Well I don’t know if it’s real”, said G. “Give me that!” In S’s book Harlan Ellison signed “G - the signature below is real!” The person G pushed out of the way was Ray Bradbury.
