- heyitsguay 2y agoNice!! I had a lot of fun with a project like this with some more generalized rulesets. This video got the most views: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EW9Q0qMc2Xc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EW9Q0qMc2Xc (just running 3d Brian's Brain) but I like this one the most, with a much more general ruleset: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SoJvS6GuM3c&t=90s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SoJvS6GuM3c&t=90s The code is here: https://github.com/heyitsguay/gol3d https://github.com/heyitsguay/gol3d I keep meaning to go back and create an automated ruleset explorer that looks for stable but non-oscillating and non-constant population counts. Maybe someday...
- teaearlgraycold 2y agoLooks cool, although when I run it the simulation always seems to halt after a couple dozen steps.
- HankB99 2y agoI wonder if the 3D version exhibits behaviors similar to the 2D version, including periodic patterns. I also have to link my favorite pattern, XKCD's homage to John Conway: https://xkcd.com/2293/ https://xkcd.com/2293/
- heyitsguay 2y agoCertain rules do, though the exact analog rule of Conway's Game of Life is a bit boring as i recall. In general it was a lot easier to find interesting behavior in Brian's Brain rulesets.
- aj7 2y agoImagine. And all that work trying to derive physics from TWO dimensional finite automata.
- ellis0n 2y agoI wonder how complex a simulator of the Game of Life 3D itself would be? https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39799755 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39799755
- meling 2y agoThis could be fun to view on an Apple Vision Pro or other similar device.
- tombert 2y agoA friend of mine made something like this in WebGL for a computer graphics class a few years ago. I thought it was pretty neat.
