Show HN: Open-Source Ad-Free File Upload Service
- nashashmi 3y agoA webrtc service would work better. Instant.io or sharedrop.io work wonderfully.
- vednig 3y agoDefinitely, we could work on implementing it for large files to reduce bandwith costs. P2P is great as long as you have central server. Torrents are also nice way to implement p2p but fail with zero peers plus there's. Maybe something like creating a network of self-hosted instances with ability to connect to each other an replicate could be great?
- nashashmi 3y agoA hybrid system is ideal. Lowers server costs all around. I think for lightweight files, p2p alone would suffice. Heavier files would require some sort of server based system. But A hybrid system would be tricky to implement. (The web rtc approach in instant.io maxes out at ram size.)
- vednig 3y agoSometimes you just want to leave some files out for the other person to find it.
- mrbishalsaha 3y agoPlease explain how it works and why to use it?
- vednig 3y agoSure^
- mrbishalsaha 3y agoThanks. Seems a great project
- vednig 3y agoCurrently, all or atleast majority of file upload and sharing services either show ads or have download speed limited at 1 MBps. With DoShare, we are aiming at increased download speed and no-bullsh*t file uploads. Each time you try to transfer file from PC to Mobile or another network a lot of things com in the way including file services asking your email id to send you a link. Why not simply let me upload and give me direct link? DoShare is built with S3,Flask(upload) and Preact(3kb react-alternatve library). So, you can even host your own service directly by entering S3 credentials. We are using Cloudflare's R2 r2.cloudflare.com - S3 Compatible for the hosted version. So here we are, Steps to use: [] Upload File [] Get Direct Link [] Share Link to Device (and voila download starts...except for mimetypes png, jpg, audio, video they get rendered in chrome: we're working on that.) Our hosted version is currently capped at 200MB sized files. But if you have bigger needs simply change it in flask upload server. And the best part is, we get to enjoy file sharing, again.
- vednig 3y agoAlso, currently we are using https://plausible.io/ https://plausible.io/ for analytics. No other bugs.
- KomoD 3y ago> all or atleast majority of file upload and sharing services either show ads or have download speed limited at 1 MBps That's just not true. filebin.net, send.vis.ee, pixeldrain.com, google drive (no ads or 1MBps limits afaik), filemail.com, gofile.io, filetransfer.io, sprend.com I can keep going, all of these also have higher file size limits than yours, and doesn't have your file type restrictions.
- vednig 3y agoYeah, I won't argue with that. But these services file service also have: Long URLs when shared with public: Like: https://send.vis.ee/download/0f7ecfa933b6b2c0/#8UuLM3xXjsK6CjLgPSCkYA https://send.vis.ee/download/0f7ecfa933b6b2c0/#8UuLM3xXjsK6C... https://filebin.net/5e7fe89ii8v5kkrj https://filebin.net/5e7fe89ii8v5kkrj https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rlZfOJZG7M6lDNNW_x6qffcjFKscVbxF/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rlZfOJZG7M6lDNNW_x6qffcjFKs... Which doesn't exactly make it great to spellout, whenever I want to share it to someone near me. I would use Generate QR but then again that's an additional extra step for me and for, reciever. Rather than going to chrome/safari and directly using. Plus, all these service want you and reciever to come to their page so they can collect data from both sides sharer and reciever. They don't provide direct links easily. Some like GDrive, even would require a third party tool to get a direct link if you don't want to open browser and directly download in WSL or Any Linux Subsystem. Not to mention buggy UI in Google Drive app on Android, Limited downloads in FileTransfer(20) , Sprend(5). But any of the above problems can arise if you realy want to share file some amazing file to your friend and it turns out you're stuck at download speed or something. DoShareMe is built for reliablility, better UI, easy access, direct links and privacy all in one.
- gus_massa 3y agoWhat is the licence of the github repo? I can't find one. Do you require CLA?
- vednig 3y agoI'm still working on it. What do you suggest? It could be either MIT Licensed / Apache / GNU v3 No, I don't think a CLA is required. I believe it would only implicate more time and decrease the potential overhead for contributions.
- gus_massa 3y agoThat's a hard question. I prefer MIT or BSD, I but don't expect to see a single penny. And remember that it allows mega big corps to use and host and sell your program. I don't mind it, so it's totally fine for me, but other people get angry. For a server tool you can use AGPL that force everyone hosting your program to share the improvements. Many bussines don't like it, so it will get less adoption. You can sell a comercial licence for the (A)GPL haters. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-licensing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-licensing I hate CLA! But if you start your project as AGPL, accept contributions and later decide to transform it to MIT, it would be very difficult. With a CLA you can change the licence to MIT or to propietary or a weird licence. I don't like it becuse it gives too much power to the mantainers. I'd not send PR to projects with CLA.
- vednig 3y agoYup, exactly after the whole Redis fiasco and RedHat Enterprise Linux Situation last year. I'm unsure about even the type of licensing let it be restrictive or non-restrictive. I don't want to build an organization or community that will be disappointed to a project they have contributed part of their time to.
