Infinitown
- c22 2y agoThis is cool, but I really wanted to be able to zoom.
- throwaway290 2y agoIt is pinchable on mobile (Safari).
- kevincox 2y agoDidn't work for me on Firefox Android for some reason.
- fortyseven 2y agoSame os/browser, but it works here. Weird. :{
- kevincox 2y agoActually I can zoom in little, but not out. Maybe there is no zoom out?
- thih9 2y agoI’d like to drive one of the cars please. Preferably with heavier traffic, working traffic lights and collision detection.
- addandsubtract 2y agoI was going to suggest locking the camera onto a car to see it travel through the city, but driving it would be even better.
- throwaway290 2y agoCars never turn!
- dontdoxxme 2y agoIf you watch for long enough they also sometimes fail to stop. So just like a real city too.
- probably_wrong 2y agoThey don't need to: if you keep going straight in an infinite city you'll eventually reach a place that's virtually indistinguishable from the one you intended. And just wait until you reach the library!
- paipa 2y agoAnd even if you go to a specific place in an infinite city, the entire trip will require at most one turn, an infinitesimally rare event. No wonder we never catch them in the act.
- vallode 2y agoNo humans walking around makes me sad :( A really cool project, albeit worrying that 50% of the real estate of Infinitown is roads only a couple of cars drive on ;) When zoomed in all the way I wish there was some LOD meshing to provide longer view distance, would make it feel much more immersive in that sense.
- littlestymaar 2y agoPretty much like the real world in modern cities then…
- CuriousCosmic 2y ago*modern North American cities ftfy
- littlestymaar 2y agoIf only… I live in France, and lived a bit in the UK and suburbs are like that in Europe too.
- Woshiwuja 2y agoGrid layout, only cars around. Yep, the USA
- Barrin92 2y agoA handmade ever-growing version that has plenty of people in it is this one which I recently stumbled about. https://floor796.com/ https://floor796.com/
- amadeuspagel 2y agoThese clouds look like flying rocks.
- willbush 2y agoReminds me of the clouds from Vivarium
- prmoustache 2y agoNot a town, a nightmare.
- RiverRay- 2y agoThat’s cool. Do you have the source code? I’ll definitely have to study it.
- yobert 2y agoReally cool demo!
- Zarkonnen 2y agoAdorable!
- _0j9w 2y agoI remember seeing this years ago. While trying to recreate this I learned so much and had lots of fun. I still love scrolling through the city to this day!

- 5- 2y agothere was a project[0] that did a similar display over real openstreetmap data, sadly the demo[1] seems to be offline now, but there's a video of it[2]. - sureglymop 2y agoIt contains the whole world? Where do the 3d data and meshes come from?
- 5- 2y agoiirc mostly the osm building height data (see e.g. https://demo.f4map.com https://demo.f4map.com or https://streets.gl/ https://streets.gl/), the facade textures were heuristically generated (thus the similarity to op).
- sandos 2y agoWow, I have many osm 3D tools but nothing has come close the pretty-ness of that one!
- guigui 2y agoAuthor here. It's amusing to see this resurfacing today since it was released 7 years ago. I suppose it's due to the recent launch of our latest WebGL experience: https://equinox.space https://equinox.space It's an immersive space survival experience with interactive storytelling. Hope you like it! EDIT: HN thread regarding Equinox: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40113013 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40113013
- 5- 2y agovery nicely programmed! this having the somewhat similar style and premise to https://armorgames.com/play/17813/dont-escape-3 https://armorgames.com/play/17813/dont-escape-3 , i couldn't help but wait, and wait, for the twist. i guess that it never came was the twist, in the end...
- FinnKuhn 2y agoFor just running in my browser this was very impressive - Kudos to the team behind it :D
- toddmorey 2y agoEquinox is impressive! Just want to say y'all do amazing work. The feel and tone of these experiences is great. Much more than the standard tech demo.
- whamlastxmas 2y agoHey! Just wanted to say I loved browserquest when it came out, and it was a material influence for me to get into web development. I had a lot of fun tinkering with the code and understanding it
- okokwhatever 2y agoCars crashes everywhere but quite cool!
- igtztorrero 2y agoLove this !
- barfard 2y ago[dead]
- qalmakka 2y agoOn this computer it has pretty bad framerate on Firefox, but it works great on Chrome (Linux)
- deleted 2y ago[deleted]
- Gulthor 2y agoThis project makes me want to play SimCity 2000 again. Congrats, nice execution.
- agluszak 2y agoInteresting that nowadays we think that a prototypical city must have cars, but not necessarily pedestrians and public transport.
- LanternLight83 2y agoJust judging by fan speed on me anchiant Core i3, this out-performs github's sign-up flow by a substantial margin.
