Why the World Still Needs Immanuel Kant
- 082349872349872 3y ago(while waiting for a link) Q. Should I read Kant? A. How would a world be in which everyone had to read him?
- rurban 3y agoOnly if you are religious, and want to experience the latest trends in metaphysics and proofs of God existence. And his writings sucks. Modern philosophers are more readable and not stuck in metaphysics. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critique_of_the_Kantian_philosophy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critique_of_the_Kantian_philos... Schopenhauer was really nice to him
- woodruffw 3y agoKant's religious views are an eternal source of oscillating debate: he was criticized in his own time for expressing a moral system that necessitates the non-agency of god in moral matters. I think it's fair to say that his religious views are (1) unorthodox, (2) logically disconnected from mainstream Western religious metaphysics, and (3) partially deflated in terms of contemporary analyses of his ethics, where he really (IMO) shines.
- strogonoff 3y agoKant’s views are a refreshing change compared to default physicalist monism of the STEM-educated but philosophically naïve crowd here (who do not even realize that their view is unfalsifiable). I would say Kantian influence on modern philosophy is strong enough that one can get away without reading him directly. Reading the original is always a good idea but in that case you would perhaps need to do some work to compensate for the differences between cultural context then and now.
