Ask HN: Where do I send my invoice for BotGPT scraping my copyrighted material?
These fucking tech firms must be out of there fucking minds, thinking they can scrape copyrighthed material and use it for their model training.
I have put a price on my copyrighted writings online, and it will be stated in robots.txt and perhaps elsewhere, that I will charge an hourly rate for the material they scrape.
Unless things online has a permissive statement around being used by others, stop using shit that is not your to use.

- lobito14 2y agoCopyright is a broken concept that needs rethinking.
- Dalewyn 2y agoAt least in this context, copyright is fine. The only thing(s?) broken are the people who won't fathom a concept as simple and old as paying someone for their time and work.
- shadowgovt 2y agoIs it though? I note that complaints about Google crawling the Internet to harvest data into a search index generally fall on deaf ears, but complaints about it harvesting that data into OneBox tend to generate buzz. This suggests the issue isn't the harvesting but how the data is transformed or resurfaced. And there's nuance as to whether training a generative pre-trained transformer should be thought of more like collecting content to reshare without permission or indexing content to build something novel.
