> “obviously, the people mentioned … aren’t [female] at all”, but “men performing their idea of femaleness”.
the bracketed word there I replaced is [women]. The remarkable thing about this sentence, is how wrong it is with the word it chose, and how correct it is with that one word changed.
No one thinks people biologically born men have an XX chromosome. No one disputes that. The discussion is that "performing femaleness" is learned by societal expectations around how females vs males act. There's nothing inherent to female biology that says they have to have long hair. There's nothing inherent to female biology that says they have to wear skirts. There's nothing inherent to female biology that says they have to wear earings.
We created societal constructs around these ideas. And then we started assigning behaviors to these ideas that are similarly not anything to do with biology. And accordingly, we have 2 different words. One of them "woman" refers to how people present. The other of them "female" refers to the biology of someone. No one is trying to trick you into thinking they're female. Some people associate more with the traits we typically ascribe to "women" than the traits we typically ascribe to "men" and don't want to be called names for not conforming to typically "masculine" traits. Also vice versa.
This whole article is clearly just clickbait. They're not having an argument with a real person.
