When companies grew so large that they stopped caring about their impact on their immediate surroundings. In my friend's tiny town there are literally two companies that employ everyone living there. Once my friend was complaining to me about poor performance of one employee. I asked "can't you just fire him?" to which he replied "then I'll have a jobless bum walking around my town, I need to have him doing something". Meanwhile modern big corporations don't care about such issues because they are completely shielded from the results of their mismanagement.
