My experience was different. While I'm all for exploring off the beaten path, I think the backlash for things being too touristy is overblown. I thoroughly enjoyed St. Mark's and the surrounding zone just as much as I enjoyed exploring the nooks and alleyways. I can say the same about the Las Ramblas and other touristy areas of Barcelona too. Maybe it's because I am a tourist. While I tend to visit cities many times, I'm never going to be a native Venetian and will never have the same experience of the city as one.
