David Weber "Honor Harrington" space battles go into some details like that, some few other authors try to think about the practicalities of technological limits, too. Often it strongly resembles sailboats in space.
"Gratuitous Space Battles" may be a better representation of the situation you describe. The actual encounter is a formality, the strategic choices made hours or days beforehand will determine outcomes.
- bloopernova 3y agoYeah, I enjoyed the Honorverse books. Although it's been a while since I read those books, did they have any light delay stuff? If you liked the Honorverse, check out the Lost Fleet: Dauntless. It describes fleet combat very well, the universe rules are consistent and well thought up. It's written by an ex-Navy captain, so the fleet feels realistic.
