Why China is defeating Tesla
- mytailorisrich 3y agoTesla's market cap is crazy high: 81B revenue, 480B market cap, 36 P/E. For comparison, General Motors: 172B revenue, 50B market cap 6 P/E. The article also compares Tesla to Meta and Google... well that's the crux of the issue. It has been considered a tech company when it really is a car manufacturer. Reality is catching up and China is only a trigger.
- smt88 3y agoThat's true of stock performance, but Tesla sales are slowing too. That's not part of any reality check on the stock price, it's because of competition.
- mytailorisrich 3y agoSure. That was also predicted, though: Tesla used to be the EV manufacturer but as everyone moves to EVs then, again, Tesla falls back to being one car manufacturer among many. Competition is not good for Tesla because they don't stand out on price or quality, or anything really apart from the somewhat "tech cool" image the brand has had. Reality of being... a car manufacturer.
- simonblack 3y agoThe Innovator's Dilemma - the cheaper 'good enough' product kills off the expensive highly-profitable product. Read the book. "If you want to live with the classes, you sell to the masses. When you sell to the classes, you'll live with the masses." - Old business proverb. Sell big volumes of cheap products, and you'll make a lot more money than selling a few high-priced items. The Chinese will own the big EV market. Just like the Americans owned the big ICE market back in the 1930s.
