One thing we need to think about when it comes to sustainability is use and lifetime of use. Leather has an extremely long lifetime. A well made leather item can last longer than a human life and can be passed on. They've even found still-workable leather in ancient egyptian tombs. I think "vegan" (plastic) leather is a massively bigger problem. (I realize in this article they are discussing a non-plastic material.)
