Why does the government need to investigate this exercise of free speech? Does the constitution say we that the press should only be free if they're fair and balanced? And if so, what happens to Fox News?
- hagbard_c 3y agoThey don't, that's why I suggest someone else should take over.
- ceejayoz 3y agoAs mentioned, Fox News is plenty happy to go after Media Matters. There's no lack of people shouting across the aisle at each other.
- hagbard_c 3y agoFox News is not unbiased and as such not the right organisation for this purpose. As far as I can see none of the 'networks' in the US are anything close to unbiased.
- ceejayoz 3y agoBy all means, let us pick an unbiased arbiter of truth. All we have to do is find one!
- jcranmer 3y agoLet he who is unbiased cast the first stone.
- hagbard_c 3y agoMedia Matters (et. al.) have been casting stones for a long time so it would not be the first one but yes, that is one of the problems in dealing with this type of actor.
- klyrs 3y agoWho should take over, and what powers would you grant them?
- hagbard_c 3y agoPowers are not granted to people who look into the reporting of organisations like Media Matters. They just start a project to keep track of how the organisation acts when confronted with different media outlets, e.g. does Media Matters treat a report from MSNBC which contains factual errors the same as one from Fox News? Does Media Matters use out-of-context clips or citations from 'progressive' political commentators like it does with those from the centre and right?
- klyrs 3y agoAlright, no complaints here. What's preventing you from making your media-watchdog-watchdog? Aside from the dubious valprop, I guess.
- hagbard_c 3y agoNot being American, having far too much to do already, only being one person without a large enough network of like-minded relatively unbiased people who are willing to commit significant time to a project like this. Something like this should be picked up by a university as a research project but current academia being what it is this is not possible in the USA because it will be impossible to abide by the 'unbiased' criterium. It might be possible for e.g. a Swedish, Dutch or German university to do this [1] but even if they did the results would be written off due to 'foreign actors' 'meddling' in 'American affairs'. [1] not that academia in Europe is free from the type of 'hyper-progressive' bias seen in the USA, far from it. The rot has not sunk as deep here, that's all.
- klyrs 3y agoSounds like you've got a bone to pick with progressivism, you're biased too. Great start.
