What Would Success Look Like in American Education?
- incomingpain 3y agoWhat north american education systems need to address is that their current design is about funneling workers into factories. It's about memorizing procedures perfectly and no room for self-thought. About complete obedience and attendance, etc. This isn't compatible with modern jobs and results in a great deal of mental health issues. And while there's some move toward bringing factory jobs back to north america, we have largely speaking moved on from this. I take physics as an example. In real life, you are discouraged from using your memory. You are obligated to verify and look up equations and various standard numbers. Yet our schools want you to memorize some unmemorizable formula. Flipside, in real life, if you got 55% of your work correct. You would be fired from your job rapidly. The obvious first step is that you should be allowed to reference anything, especially the text book, but nearperfection of answers should be necessary. I also consider the invention of videos and the internet. Why is society paying an army worth of teachers to teach the same thing over and over. Why wouldn't we have some sort of system where kids are watching standardized tremendously high standard educational videos that very few teachers have the skill to meet. Instead teachers can instead be answers and personalized education. So they dont waste their time teaching pythagorean theorem 50+ times in the career. Instead some video does that, and they instead get to actually teach and be there for their students? >Not all individual students created equal, but all races/genders/ethnicities/socioeconomic classes/etc. created equal in the classroom! This is the perspective that says that the goal is to ensure proportional representation across different demographic groups But also the practical reality that good teachers are going to stay in good neighbourhoods. Which the student isnt even what matters so much but rather the inability to have some sort of quality education because of the lack of practical talent. Whereas there could be highest quality teachers who produce videos who teach the core of education and the in classroom teacher is about making the education that much better. responding to actual individual questions. But imagine as well. We could also later after producing that 1 high quality video for pythagorean. Eventually the curriculum is filled out with quality videos. All of these videos could be make public and free. These high quality acting teachers could then move onto more advanced topics and compete against the MIT open courseware type videos. We could end up in a situation where the public education system doesnt have some age where you stop learning. Obviously im basically describing youtube at this point.
