WTH is up with the hate on C#?
- DarkNova6 3y agoBut is it that C# is hated by the masses or is it a vocal minority hating against languages they know very little of? Personally, I love C# for game development and Java for backend tasks. There are legitimate reasons not to not like either language but I never see these reasons being mentioned. Rather, I see people who at some point in their live were exposed to these languages with little experience, thrown into the shark tank and developed a passionate hate because they did not have the prerequisites to actually comprehend what they were working on. Universities certainly did Java a disservice, exposing students to ancient syntax and construts from the 90s which has burnt them ever since.
- ametrau 3y agoYeah C# is really, really nice. And the standard library is incredible. But there's so much MS baggage and MBA bullshittery that it's a headache to use--and that's even if you're targeting windows solely. .net NET dotnet core netcore coredotnet netCORE CORE core 5, 6, 7, net 9, dot core 4. One other thing: To get the most out of csharp you want to use visual studio. Yes there are good extensions for vscode but they are so inferior in every way to the VS experience that it's kind of pointless. VS has these really great tools but it's a hulking buggy proprietary, paid for, colossus. I don't even know what it's like to use on macos, I never even bothered (I imagine it's even worse than windows). So great language, but the experience in practice is hampered by the MBAs at MS (and it'll never, ever, get better because of that).
- DarkNova6 3y ago> One other thing: To get the most out of csharp you want to use visual studio. Yes there are good extensions for vscode but they are so inferior in every way to the VS experience that it's kind of pointless. I'll vouch for Rider. And if you are familiar with the Jetbrains suite, using it is a no-brainer. Anyway, could you explain what you mean with MBA in the context of C#?
- Khelavaster 3y agoWhat do you mean by MBA bullshittery? And yes, VS offers more for c# than any other IDE for its language... Why the criticism that it does too much? Is the colossal, modular system unwieldy when you install the limited subset of features you need?
- ametrau 3y agoThe criticism is that it crashes regularly and doesn’t have the customisability of vscode (less important).
- nullindividual 3y agoThe naming of .NET is unimportant and those who work in the space can easily grok the naming scheme. Using this as part of your argument brings down the remainder of your points.
- ametrau 3y agoIt muddies the water in all discussions and web searches.
- neonsunset 3y agoI don't think it ever mattered really, it's "just .NET" since 4 years ago anyway. One of the nicest dev setups for it is Rider/VSC + macOS: minimalistic, focused and productive.
- mrkeen 3y ago> 2. C# is a dynamically typed language with run-time type checking. Nice! C# will tell my users at runtime what it should have told me at compile time? > 6. C# is fully Object Oriented allowing you to implement the most hard-core object patterns without a single gotcha or workaround. What is 'fully Object Oriented'? > 7. C# is functional, providing for completely static apps without an object in sight. What is 'functional'? > Microsoft could have squashed Mono on multiple occasions Yep
- MissTake 3y agoMy personal take is that C# is seen as more of a corporate language and not ‘kewl’. I still remember doing my work in C# while Ruby on Rails was the thing all the cool kids were doing. These days one here’s significantly more about JS based development with things like React (which also seems to have hit its peak). I’m a simple lass myself. I do C# and Sql - with a little bit of Python and I’m trying to get my head around Rust. However for me my strength (as much as it is being not a true developer) will always be C#. As I approach my 60’s soon I’m OK with that. I dare say if I were in my 30s I’d want to experiment more.

- pestatije 3y ago> Java was overtaken by C# years ago. i dont quite get the point...you mean in the obsolescence rating?
