Then put a strain on things humans need but machines don’t - food, mental health, time off, sunlight, recreation, childcare, education. This doesn’t have to be done by machines either - just successful but sociopathic humans with resources and automation that doesn’t question their motive or means. Because you can achieve scale fast through tech, anything damaging can be scaled quickly, so if communication between humans becomes impaired, then they can all get surprised by the same problem and not know how to respond. Finally you may see some specimens kept as pets to aid whatever is left unaided.
