Mystery of Where Gold and Platinum Come from Deepens After Gargantuan Explosion

- A_D_E_P_T 3y agoThe article focuses on one event, the "BOAT" -- an exceptionally bright supernova, but one which doesn't seem to have been very productive. > "Using the telescope’s Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec), the team looked at the elements typically seen in supernovae. The signal wasn’t particularly bright, indicating that the supernova that yielded the brightest gamma ray burst ever seen wasn’t superlative itself." The implicit, unanswered question: Is there evidence of gold/platinum/osmium/etc. formation following other observed supernovae? And another that's left very vague: If we can rule supernovas out, what are the plausible physical mechanisms that might be behind their relative abundance? Also note: The stars of the early universe were very large, very bright monsters. [1] It's plausible that early universe supernovas are somehow qualitatively different from contemporary supernovas. - gcanyon 3y agoI thought we already knew that supernovas don’t produce all heavy elements, and that cosmic rays and neutron star mergers make up for (some of? most of? all of?) the rest. Here’s a video discussing it. To be fair, they do point out that this is a recent discovery. https://youtu.be/lInXZ6I3u_I?si=JGKs-yUc718JUWzh https://youtu.be/lInXZ6I3u_I?si=JGKs-yUc718JUWzh
- nico 3y agoIt would be so cool if there was a dataset of supernovae images tagged by age, then create a video of the evolution of a supernova over time
- andy99 3y agoAt the time of writing the caption under the first image says "An artist’s visualization of the BOAT, consisting of jews from a central black hole and the surrounding remains of a star going supernova." Huh?
- CapitalistCartr 3y agoThey're talking about the Jewish Space Lasers that control the weather.
- pfdietz 3y agoShould be "jets".
