There's many different things we might expect students to gain from homework. One might be: building memories and familiarity. Another might be: practicing problem solving. There's plenty of work that teachers assign that do some or none of those things.
When I was doing my math homework in high school, I really wasn't concerned about edge cases. That's work at a higher level than most K-12 students aim for.
