If it were a fort there would be evidence of postholes and other remains of defense fortifications. There's a decent amount of fortified sites known from the neolithic, so I assume it would've been ruled out quickly. They also tended to build forts on hills and this structure is on flat ground and the "monument" looks quite small for defense.
The article seems to allude to it having some sort of funeral practices
- jccooper 2y agoThe later structures are suggested to be funerary. The oldest one (with the lobes) is unknown. From the aerial photo, it seems they haven't dug the interior. They mention a gravel layer in the ditch which suggests a palisade. I'm not quite sure how they get there (I don't see the actual report), but presumably they have some basis. As a fenced enclosure, it seems to small for livestock, but perhaps a fortified homestead.
