A few years ago Descent3 was modernized by Icculus(Ryan Gordon) to play on modern hardware running Linux and released thru Steam. The old version was unable to run on modern distros. The new released version uses SDL2 and runs nicely on modern hardware even the SteamDeck. Anyway it has some bugs which hopefully can be addressed if more people chime in.
