Congress allocated money to train Ukrainians on F16s in summer of 2022. Still no F16s in theater - only "maybe by end of this year". Biden's timidity has a huge cost for Ukraine.
- defrost 2y agoBiden's timidity, or the Republican blocking of Ukraine aid? House of Representatives holds off on Ukraine aid package − here's why the US has a lot at stake in supporting Ukraine https://theconversation.com/house-of-representatives-holds-off-on-ukraine-aid-package-heres-why-the-us-has-a-lot-at-stake-in-supporting-ukraine-227420 https://theconversation.com/house-of-representatives-holds-o... Biden has asked Congress to approve another $95 billion in aid for Ukraine, Israel and other allies. About $60 billion of this would be spent on Ukraine. While the Senate passed this foreign aid bill in February 2024, it is stalled in the House of Representatives. Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson has not allowed a vote on the measure.

The funds for the F16 training were allocated almost 2 years ago, but Biden refused to allow the training to go forward for a year or more, and he's continually put up roadblocks to actual deployment. And Biden was the one who had the marvelous idea to tie Ukraine funding to his idea of border security back in October. A complete non-starter that completely derailed things. When the house offered to pass a Ukraine support bill, Biden emphatically stated that he would not sign it without the "keep the border open forever bill" attached to it. There's broad bipartisan support for Ukraine, but the dolts in both parties are too busy bickering with one another to care.
- avmich 2y agoMy understanding og the situation is the following. The funds for Ukraine were allocated by the Congress; since they are exhausted, towards the end of 2023, more allocations are needed. Biden sent enough help that in Ukraine there were jokes about the number of memorial monuments in his honor. It's not that he suddenly decided that no more help should come. At the same time Biden administration demonstrates a certain dualism regarding Ukraine - the party of Antony Blinken (and Lloyd Austin to a large degree) works for Ukraine to win, the party of Jake Sullivan works for Ukraine not to lose, which in practice delays the war and bleeds Ukraine of soldiers. Tying Ukraine help to the border security was a regular political trade - Republicans emphasized the need for border security, Democrats emphasized the need for the help to the Ukraine. While there's bipartisan support in general, the vocal Republicans insist on "America first" and now the Republican speaker won't run the voting which would materialize help to Ukraine. It's not Biden who's delaying the help to Ukraine, it's Republicans - especially some Republicans - and particularly the speaker.
