It was my lecturers first year being a “Dr” and first year lecturing.
I had years of previous study experience, 3 prior degree’s, one was a science degree and I also had a masters degree with honours - all which I obtained before generative AI was mainstream, and she kept asking me to prove my work was written by me. Including my exam. The course I was doing was a 3rd year undergrad level course which I was doing to basically fulfil entry criteria into my next master degree.
I ended up hating that lecturer. I felt the assignments she set were actually too basic, and didn’t require any analysis or critical thinking whatsoever, they were just generic assignments requiring basic research skills using Google scholar, and followed a super generic format.
I have to say though, when I have had to work in group assignments with other students (which I did have to do in my first masters) I was appalled at the literacy of some of the students, and an overwhelming number of them didn’t seem to understand how to properly reference something.
Some of them would just write something, and then go cherry pick a reference that matched it. I had one group member for a course on supply chains, make a statement in the assignment about the impact of COVID-19 on supply chains - and used a reference on post-operative health outcomes for patients having arthroscopic procedures during the COVID-19 lockdown period. I just could not understand how someone that didn’t understand how inappropriate that is at a Masters level even got allowed to do a master - except for the fact that they could pay the many thousands of dollars in fees that the uni charged international students.
