Wow, evolution keeps throwing surprises.
>The large assemblies this protein can build are more clearly an evolutionary accident: as beautifully regular and complex as higher-order Sierpiński triangles are, they only appear at non-physiological concentrations and their size would be difficult to fit into the cytoplasm of S. elongatus. Even if the 18mer fulfils a useful function, the ability of the protein to make larger assemblies is almost certainly an accidental by-product of the unusual symmetry it happened to have evolved.
