You do wonder where all the electricity will come from once the full complement of AI and electric cars and heat pumps go online. And how it'll get where it needs to go with a grid that hasn't been appreciably upgraded in decades.
- ericmcer 3y agoFocusing so much of our research and innovation on digital technologies does seem like something that will bite us eventually. Maybe once VR gets good enough no one will leave the house and it will all balance out.
- exe34 3y agoIf it's anything like return to the office, there will be legions of landlords in Congress/parliament making laws to force everybody back into the coffee shops.
- listenallyall 3y agoHard to imagine a bleaker future than every person isolated in their own tiny residence, never leaving, existing solely through some VR network... and yet we already have individuals like exe34 complaining that someone might try to dissuade society from embracing this exact scenario.
- brokenmachine 3y agoBetter than open-plan offices.
- exe34 3y agoOh no, I'm miserable and lonely, but I also accept that my inability to make friends and find a partner should not entitle me to force others to spend time with me. Most people are able to find plenty of companionship, they just don't want to spend time with you or me.
- financltravsty 3y agoNo one's thinking that far ahead because that would necessitate all this investment into AI having a greater return than just hype-driven valuation. If the viability of what was sold as the applications of AI is true, then every person with a shred of foresight would be jumping in to make it happen. So far, all we've gotten are mildly better replacements for auto-complete, search engines, and natural language processing for human-computer interfaces (all things already figured out in the 70s). Either the people involved with the research and production of AI are myopic, lacking vision, or they understand -- whether consciously or unconsciously -- that what was sold cannot be done, and have simply resigned to fattening the hog for as long as they can before making their exits. I'm of the opinion it's a mixture of both.
- HeatrayEnjoyer 3y agoEVs are a net reduction in grid electrical consumption. Fuel production requires vast amounts of electricity.
- 11101010001100 3y agoIs this true over the lifecycle of an ICE vs EV?
