Per my anecdotal experience, this is same with credit cards versus cash and before that checks/cheques versus cash had the same effect. The joke "I still have cheques, that means I still have money" or some variant, refers to this frictionless behavior. With lack of basic personal money management education, it is a permanent, lifelong indebtedness for a very large portion of the population.
