- gregjor 3y agoList incomplete and dated. I think calling these long-term visas "digital nomad visas" confuses some terminology. Digital nomads generally (not always) travel and stay on tourist visas. Someone who obtains a long-stay visa in a foreign-country and settles in doesn't live nomadically anymore, I would call them expats or even immigrants. Nomads travel frequently with no home base, though I understand that doesn't apply the same way to everyone and the label "digital nomad" can include a lot of people with different travel and work habits. Some countries created so-called digital nomad visas so they can collect taxes from people working in the country on tourist visas. The nomads already visited and spent money, but under the radar, not paying local taxes.

- gregjor 3y agoYes I understand the difference. Expats may also stay on retirement or marriage/family visas with no intention of immigrating, or they may work at an overseas office for their employer. Expats generally settle in for the long-term as residents. The word "nomad" means someone with no permanent home base who moves from place to place. Digital nomad refers to a person who travels frequently or full-time, working online from anywhere. DNs usually travel on tourist visas, staying a few weeks to a few months, then moving on. Tourist visas (including visa on arrival and visa waiver) have short durations and do not allow working. Recognizing that the digital nomad lifestyle mainly attracts well-off westerners some countries introduced visas designed to keep the more affluent nomads in the country longer (thus the income/savings requirements) and collect at least some taxes from them.
- eesmith 3y agoThere are permanent ex-pats, as Arthur C. Clark was in Sri Lanka. ("Clarke, a British expat who made his home in the nearby island nation of Sri Lanka", https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smithsonian-institution/personal-writings-arthur-c-clarke-reveal-evolution-2001-space-odyssey-180954967/ https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smithsonian-institution/perso... ) Also, seasonal farm workers crossing the US border without legal authorization are not called "illegal ex-pats", even when they have every intent to leave within a few years.
