> The unfortunate reality of human psychology is to group people together and penalize the group for behaviors the group itself deems extreme and appalling. The asshole behavior of one tourist paints all tourists the same color.
But it doesn't. People still trust each other, as they should (by any risk calculation, and by human nature). I give directions all the time and people trust me. I ask for and receive directions and, despite the fantasies of sociopathology on HN and other social media, I've never been steered wrong intentionally. Other fantasized sociopathology that almost never happens: mass murder, easy to do with your car, guns (easy to get in the US) - if you are thinking of the mass shootings, think that even at the recent extremely high level, your risk is statistically zero. Even the government using physical compulsion to force people to obey the law, such as pay taxes, rarely happens - most people like living under a cooperative legal system and obey the law. Really, it's true! Go outside and look around!
- fragmede 3y agoI'm not sure why you're projecting that I'm some sort of mouth breather who doesn't leave the house, but it's rude an untrue. I'm happy for you that for whatever reason of privilege or race or wealth or just living in a pollyanna level of society that you've never had to deal with assholes to the point that you think I'm making it up when I say I've been given wrong directions (in this "outside" you speak of). is your logic here that it's never happened to you, so it's just not something that ever happens? what else do you use this logic on? go touch grass
