Well obviously this is true.
Doesn't change the fact that to participate in the world in just a few years you better pick one to interact with bc your not going to be doing too much "normal" stuff otherwise, like shop or write an article, or code a website, or go to work, or I think you get it.
I don't think AI is my friend. I don't have to like it for it to be necessary. There is no stopping this.
Pray tell, what else do we do?
- kjkjadksj 3y agoAt the same time, some members of generations slightly older than us seem to be managing just fine, living the same analog patterns they’ve always lived, which still exist. I am not worried about the coming ai apocalypse to digital media because I am taking steps now to offshore myself from digital media. I hope one day to be an old man with a book or a newspaper under an arm, smiling inwardly.
- pksebben 3y agoeasy to live just fine when you bought your house prior to 2008. Just sayin'.
- kjkjadksj 3y agoKind of tangential don’t you think
- pksebben 3y agonot really. There's a difference in how much one needs to keep up with tech trends, because there's a difference in how reliant one is in getting and maintaining a job. Despite being paid fairly well, it's unlikely that I'll be able to retire early, given the housing market. A massive amount of every dollar I make is going to quickly ballooning rent and attempting to chase an ever-distant target of home ownership. I cannot afford to "get by just fine". Nor, I imagine, can many of the people in my cohort. Thus, I regularly familiarize myself with whatever it is that's new that offers the possiblity of working less and accomplishing more, because that's about the only place I find I can purchase some down-time for myself. It's certainly not coming in the form of personal equity and retirement. edit to add: I realize my earlier comment was flippant, and I'm sorry for that. The conversation is better served by engagement and I was being crass.
- ponector 3y agoYou can always move to low cost of living area. You can get a decent apartment for 200k USD in the good neighborhood in the large city in east Europe. You can even work at Google there, for something like 50k USD annual salary!
- pksebben 3y agoThere are vanishingly fewer 'low cost of living' areas. I'm in the central valley and the prices here (traditionally low enough for working class to own) have been going nuts. The problem is that we've opened up real estate investment to professional investors, who have then securitized those investments in risk-adjusted bundles to make them attractive to large investment banks. Money goes in, prices go up. Personal dwellings ought not to be subject to this but hey, anything that increases apparent GDP, right? "Large City in East Europe" - where exactly are you talking about? If it's anywhere near the Russian border I'll pass, thanks. I consider "having my home shelled" an unacceptable risk. Working for Google for 50k USD means being taken advantage of by Google in a really gross manner. Wherever you work you ought to make what you're worth to the company, and 50k for FAANG is ludicrously low.
- ponector 3y agoSo many options to run away from high cost of living and so many reasons not to do. Looks like you are ok with current state of things.
- bsder 3y ago> Pray tell, what else do we do? How about we start pushing back a bit? How about governments start using web pages again instead of Twitter and Facebook for communication? How about we start re-employing people rather than forcing everything into digital apps that disfranchises whole swathes of the population? How about we drive credit card fees to zero with legislation so that we stop disincentivizing cash? This isn't just about AI. Tech, in general, has been actively harmful to people for a while now, and they're waking up to it. AI is just a nice centralized boogeyman for the moment.
