  Apple did the same with Mac OS X, they stuck with it for 16 releases. Then Big Sur came out as MacOS 11.

    But macOS is a free update and compatibility within X was just as likely to break. So other than marketing nothing changed.

    AFAIK they never said anything about OS X being “the last version of MacOS”. So no, they did not do anything like that. I do remember Jobs talking about it being the foundation for the next 20 years, or something like that, but without mentioning any version number.
