iTunes Home Sharing and RAOP are still present and still work fine. Not sure what makes it not work for you (except the VPN connection which isn't allowed, Home Sharing is only for a single local subnet, those were the rules from the start as can be expected with the RIAA etc.). As for owning media, that was pretty easy, got a bit harder for a while and then got easy again. You can get everything you buy with no DRM and play it wherever you want for as long as you want. There are some limitations with iTunes Match AFAIK because again, recording industry/labels said no.
