I was under the impression that containers/Kubernetes actually depend more on the kernel than virtualization as they run the containers by sharing the kernel?

I was under the impression that containers/Kubernetes actually depend more on the kernel than virtualization as they run the containers by sharing the kernel? I may be misunderstanding it and need some HN knowledge power!
