On a lot of refrigerators, the relays controlling the compressor are exposed at the rear of the unit. Cheap after-market controllers exist that you can wire into the system to add that level of control to any unit. I became aware of them after watching a technologyconnections video. I have yet to install one though, as all of my fridges since then have had thermostatic control built in.
