HOPE was founded during the heyday of HIP and other European conferences, which were prohibitively expensive for many Americans to attend. Last I checked, both Europe and New York were on planet Earth.
Furthermore, it's not restricted, plenty of people attend from all over. NYC has some of the cheapest airfares of all international flights, so while it's undeniably more expensive than a domestic flight, it's the least-worst option in most cases.
- LeonB 3y agoI was answering the question of why there is (genuine) irony that a person can find in the name. A lot of people have trouble detecting irony. Showing that something can easily be interpreted in a non-ironic way does not, in any way, disprove that a thing can also be interpreted in an ironic way.
