Google might make users pay for AI features in search results
- isaacfrond 3y agoDo I hear Bing sighing 'thank you Google'? I'd pay to get that clumsy AI from the browser, there is not way in hell I'd pay to get more of it in my web searches.
- chrisjj 3y agoHear hear.
- aurareturn 3y agoI have mixed feelings about GenAI inside Google Search. Sometimes I read the auto-generated results and they're quite useful. Other times, I sense that the text generated is just plain wrong and it's better to just go click on the links. If they make me pay for it, I won't pay for it. I already pay GPT4 and it's nicer to use. Perhaps they'll do a bundle where if you pay for Gemini, they'll keep showing you generated text at the top of search results. I personally won't bother with it. It's not good enough for me to pay for it - unlike GPT4. I'm guessing that generating text for 8 billion queries per day is too costly for Google. They want to monetize it sooner rather than later.
- jqpabc123 3y agoWhat they're really trying to tell us is that AI is the new bitcoin. It consumes too much energy and costs too much to justify any real benefit to society. But as long as you're willing to pay to play, they're game.
- aurareturn 3y agoCan people stop comparing AI to crypto? Yes, there are grifters in AI. Yes, many AI companies overstate their impact. Yes, there is a ton of hype in AI. But they're not the same. Stop.
- chrisjj 3y agos/make/request/, I think :)
