I feel like every scientist and non-scientist investigating this issue is trying to push their pet theory, which is consistent with their worldview. Are they democrats? It's racism and school shootings. Are they anti big-tech or part of the mainstream media (which is basically the same thing)? It's smartphones. Are they anti-capitalists? It's economic depression. Are they libertarians? It's helicopter parenting and lockdowns.
I'm also really surprised that none of these scientists seem to be looking outside the US. We have no school shootings where I live, a very different economic environment, a completely different approach to racism, much less helicopter parenting, far less doomsaying and polarization, and yet we have the same problems. To me, this rules out everything except smartphones and possibly lockdowns, and that's with my pro-covid, pro-big-tech bias.
