Maybe knowing how to network properly is important... You can't just meet someone and say "Call me when you hear anything!" I got my current job essentially through LinkedIn. I reached out to employees at the firm/agency I wanted to work at to hear about what it was like to work there, etc. After a couple weeks we talked again and I asked how to get started in the industry, if they had anything available, etc. Networking isn't a one-off kind of thing, essentially you are trying to be something of a 'friend' to this person, benefiting both parties.
