China is betting on battery swaps to tackle EV chargers shortage
- more_corn 3y agoI’ve heard this story before. Remember Better Place? If you want to predict how it’s going to go just replay the last attempt with updated starting conditions. Be sure not to assume that anyone will learn from past mistakes.
- xenospn 3y agoI’m sure the Chinese can execute better than the Israelis. A decade ago the tech was simply not there, regardless of how much state funding they got.

- BizarroLand 3y agoThat tech will be a long time coming for any current EV system. The Tesla batteries weigh something like 1400 lbs, building the machinery to manhandle those loads reliably is a major undertaking. Of course, there is a chance that between smaller, lighter batteries (with less range) and 5 minute battery swaps we could cross that bridge. Increasing the safety margin by waiting for sodium batteries to mature would also be smart. Maybe 20 years from now we'll have a decent system in place.
- bcrl 3y agoOnce you start swapping batteries, aluminium-air batteries become a real option. There was a demo 10 years ago showing a 1000 mile range using such a battery. Alcoa and Phinergy did such a demo - see https://eepower.com/news/ev-with-1000-mile-range-unveiled-by-alcoa-and-phinergy/ https://eepower.com/news/ev-with-1000-mile-range-unveiled-by...
