Serious question, why would someone use a Debian-family Beta?
Isnt the entire point to be able to use old hardware for servers?
If you wanted something that works with new hardware, wouldn't you use Fedora or similar?
I can't imagine the pool of people that pick an outdated distro and then pick the beta version of it.
- 01HNNWZ0MV43FF 3y agoI just like Debian. I don't want to learn a new package manager
- mlyle 3y agoUbuntu is not intended for old hardware. It is intended to be an easy-to-use distribution with decent adaptability to server and desktop use. It's not bleeding edge, but it's not all the way over in the "staid enterprise" category, either. The 24.04 release is the next release to get long-term support (5 years; commercial plans of 10 years). If you're going to stick this on a computer to run a long time, you care what it looks like (LTS releases come out every 2 years), so you might be running a beta to give feedback.
- 0cf8612b2e1e 3y agoNot even just Ubuntu directly. Other distros use Ubuntu as a starting point on which they add customizations.
- netol 3y agoNobody chooses the Beta for production. The Beta is used for testing. And it is not outdated.
- secondcoming 3y agoI looked at switching to Debian from Ubuntu, and the stable Debian versions have a lot of old packages versions. Those who want newer package versions will probably use Beta.
- jenny91 3y agoUbuntu devs use ubuntu beta, I would imagine?
- bpfrh 3y agonvm read the wrong message
- pella 3y agoFor the new CPU (Ryzen 7940HS), having the latest Linux kernel is beneficial. And due to third-party programs, Ubuntu is the most well-supported Linux distribution. Additionally, I am most familiar with it and also use it on the server side; for this reason, I choose Ubuntu.
- soneil 3y agoI use Debian on entirely up-to-date servers. I wouldn't call it outdated, I consider it stable, reliable, and trustworthy. But a more interesting point here, is that this issue was caught by someone running debian unstable. So I'm glad someone is using them, even if they don't have your approval.
