- bdjsiqoocwk 3y agoYou're not joking. I'm reading thru "Stalin" by Stephen Kotkin, and Stalin was using the term "capitalist encirclement" at least as far back as the 1920s. I get the impression that Russian state police in its different incarnations (cheka/OGPU/KGB/GRU) never really went away, they just launder the exterior (Russian Empire/USSR/Russian Federation) and keep going.
- euroderf 3y agoHah, can it all be traced back to Kievan Rus ? Or even the Mongols ?

- HillRat 3y agoThat was basically the thesis of Kennan's "Long Telegram" (https://nsarchive2.gwu.edu/coldwar/documents/episode-1/kennan.htm https://nsarchive2.gwu.edu/coldwar/documents/episode-1/kenna...).
- bdjsiqoocwk 3y agoThanks for the link. Some times you hear ideas, forget you heard them, they come back in your mind and you think they're your own. I don't know if that's the case here, but I know I'd never directly read this text, thank you.

- cmurf 3y agoIt’s this way because they aren’t ever punished for it in any meaningful way. They reap rewards of being bullies without the cost. The NHL does a billion dollars worth of free advertising for Russia by keeping pro-Putin Russians on the payroll. Whatever alliances form against it seem to inevitably succum to Russian corruption. They get bribed, or blackmailed, in some form or another. Russia are untrustworthy liars. They reneg on agreements. They drove Truman nuts. There’s never a final deal, it’s always subject to capricious renegotiation. Potsdam. The Charter. Budapest. Russia has a 1000 year history of this.
