Unity executives see a bright future for WebGPU in game development
- kiririn 3y agoThey are emphasising tiny "instant games" because that is the only form in which games in a browser are viable. The filesystem and threading APIs (among others) to support full size experiences are handicapped or non-existent. There is also nothing hugely new here, WebGL 1.0 was perfectly fine for this kind of thing, despite being a bit limited and crap to work with
- pjmlp 3y agoIndeed, I am yet to see anything comparable to Infinity Sword, which Apple used to demo the newly introduced OpenGL ES 2.0 capabilities of their iPhone, back in the day.
- astlouis44 3y agoUnreal Engine 5 was just ported to WebGPU and WebAssembly, see below: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39911041 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39911041
- koolala 3y agoWebGL2 is faster to use today for GPU performance. WebGPU, however, is in many ways simpler and more flexable. I hope we eventually see good performance benchmarks for WebGPU on GPUs across different devices / architectures.
- bentt 3y agoAny time Unity Executives say anything you can be sure it is a ploy to steer users towards their product. In this case, Unity is stronger than Unreal with browser deployment. That’s all it means though. You can wish a wish, but then you have to make it come true.
