He obtained information this way multiple times over multiple years, and fostered a phone based friendship with this woman. He seemed to have no qualms in doing this. He was also turned on by multiple people who he considered close friends. In the book it did not seem that he had considered that it might not be a "them" problem. *my details may be off here, I read it some time ago
