Ask HN: What are you doing with your Nest Secure post-sunset?
Google is ending support for their home security system, Nest Secure, in a week. If you have one, what are you doing with it? What is your understanding of how, if at all, the system will work after April 8?
Google has not officially said what will and won't work. My hope is that the system will basically work like it currently does when the internet is down. That is, the base will connect to the sensors, and it will still you when batteries are low.
I have tried contacting support multiple times and some reps have told me the system will continue to operate in this way, and others have said it will be bricked. I happened to be in the Google store on the main campus in MV, and the employee there said it will keep on working (however, he sited 9to5google as his source, which is not exactly promising).
Does anyone else have more info on this? Is there any way that there could be an open source solution to make it work better?
What are people doing with the store credit versus replacement starter kit option?
