A pet project I keep thinking about and thinking through but never quite making a start on is an sql to intermediate representation mapping that can the be optimised and then used or target different sql dialects etc. It quickly grows into a generic distributed sql engine for querying disparate data sources and, before you know it, you are inventing something to give trino a run for its money :)
