This is actually a common misconception, but you don't have to sign into an Apple ID to setup any device (except maybe the watch? But definitely not phones or tablets.) You have the option to skip the step.
I think people just assume it's required because when Microsoft implemented their shittier version of it they made it required.
- InitialLastName 3y agoAs far as I can tell, you do, however, need to have an Apple ID to install any applications (because you need it to open the app store). And even if not required, you will get continuous nags to connect to one.
- dimmke 3y agoIn my experience, the nags aren't really that bad. But you're right about installing applications. With the upcoming sideloading and app store changes, that might change and these devices will remain useful for longer.
