Gmail and Microsoft require a certain volume of email hitting their servers otherwise they forget you exist. I ended up switching to using Amazon's SES service to keep my selfhosted server running. I use seperate emails for each service much like a seperate password so I'm heavily invested in keeping my own server at least for recieving.
