Veloren, an open source game, release 0.16
- quickslowdown 3y agoNever heard of this, but it looks great! I'm going to spin up a server tonight, see what my friends who've played Minecraft with me think :)
- echelon 3y agoI was looking the other day to see if this used the Bevy game engine, but it looks like Veloren started just before Bevy and wasn't able to take advantage of it. This is a pretty massive achievement for the Veloren team to do all of this themselves.
- wexomania 3y agoOh! Is this a bit like Cube World? I loved that game before the developer dropped of the face of the planet, then came back and changed everything...
- TaylorAlexander 3y agoI’ve heard this yes, maybe a mix of cube world and another game. I never played either but Veloren is fun even when all you could do was run and paraglide around the world and explore, but they’ve long since added many story elements too.

- hasbot 3y agoPet peeve: out of context release announcements. From the README.md: Veloren is a multiplayer voxel RPG written in Rust. It is inspired by games such as Cube World, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Dwarf Fortress and Minecraft. The game is in active development and enjoys a flourishing player community.
- block_dagger 3y agoNever heard of this, but just downloaded it. After trying Vintage Story, this feels incredibly polished! Ability to zoom out from character perspective to entire world without a hitch kind of blows my mind. And written in Rust! I may be a new fan.
- rbosinger 3y agoDoes Vintage Story not feel very polished? I was just about to find some time to try it.
- idle_zealot 3y agoVintage Story is quite polished in my experience. It's a bit disappointing content-wise though. The tech progression doesn't go very far, and what's there is nearly identical to the TerraFirmaCraft Minecraft mod.
- block_dagger 3y agoIt still feels very early stage to me, perhaps "polished" is the wrong term to use. It's also extremely difficult for a casual player like myself, focusing heavily on basic survival mechanics.
- OgsyedIE 3y agoIn other games it's called Strategic Zoom and it's an impressive feature whenever it crops up.
- ashton314 3y agoI’ve been playing Veloren for several months now and I love it. (My nick is “varsderk”—say hi if you see me!) It’s been going through a ton of development progress; the game now is very different from the game I started with; it keeps getting better. So happy this thing exists!
- junon 3y agoThis is a cute game that I've played just a bit with some friends. I can recommend it if you like voxel stuff :)

- n8henrie 3y agoMy 8 year old boy loves Veloren! He'll be psyched about a new release. Trying to keep him on open source games that run on his Manjaro MacBook Air (11", 2014?). Other hits include Minecraft, SuperTux, and SuperTuxCart, 0ad, and he just loving OpenRA and OpenRA Combined Arms!
