No Traces of Life: Israel's Ecocide in Gaza 2023-2024 (report)
- Qem 3y ago> We used remote sensing to measure the scale of agricultural destruction resulting from this military activity, by comparing the region’s ‘vegetation index’ (an indicator of the health and robustness of plant life, measured by analysing satellite imagery) before and after the invasion. This comparison reveals that as of March 2024, of the agricultural areas targeted, approximately 40 percent of the land in Gaza previously used for food production has been destroyed. This report is great evidence of the man-made nature of this famine, to be presented before the International Court of Justice. The Court recently indicated additional provisional measures[1] to curb use of famine as a means to wage this war: >In its Order, the Court observes that, since 26 January 2024, “the catastrophic living conditions of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have deteriorated further, in particular in view of the prolonged and widespread deprivation of food and other basic necessities to which the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have been subjected”, and that “Palestinians in Gaza are no longer facing only a risk of famine, as noted in the Order of 26 January 2024, but that famine is setting in”. In the view of the Court, “the provisional measures indicated in the Order of 26 January 2024 do not fully address the consequences arising from the changes in the situation . . . , thus justifying the modification of these measures”. - dunekid 3y agoThere is a documentary, that is worth watching, called three broken cameras (or five?). It goes through the life of a video journalist. You can see that the struggle for homeland in Palestine has been in majorly peaceful ways. But the violent ones are the most reported. The peaceful protests are treated with brutal force. Unlike what you see in the protests by Israelis against Judicial reforms etc. I remember a scene in it, where the colonisers burn olive trees. It is a way to remove the agency of the people, who has been farming there for ages. It has been reported in the Nakba in 1948 as well, and apparently continues to this day.
- tptacek 3y agoWorth noting that the same harms inflicted on Palestinians during the Nakba were inflicted on Jewish people of Middle Eastern and North African origin, in comparable numbers, so much so that a plurality of the population in Israel is now of MENA origin.
- bluefishinit 3y agoThat's not true at all. Nakba was an ethnic cleansing of over 750,000 Palestinians. Voluntary Jewish immigration at behest of Zionist urging to Israel is not the same thing.
- tptacek 3y agoNo. There was little voluntary about the immigration we're discussing. Jewish people were chased out of Tunisia, Yemen, Morocco, and Iraq by lead-pipe mobs. You can go to Yemen today (well, you could before the Houthi takeover) and buy the silversmithing the fleeing Jewish people left behind in open-air markets.
- bluefishinit 3y agoZionists did that and generally destabilized the entire region: https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/iraq-jews-attacks-zionist-role-confirmed-operative-police-report https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/iraq-jews-attacks-zionist...
- tptacek 3y agoA pattern that continued through their controlled demolition of the World Trade Towers, I'm sure. Like every other country in the 1950s, Israel did a bunch of crazy shit. But attempting to attribute significant amounts of Jewish emigration from MENA countries to Zionist operations is risible. Pogroms against Jewish enclaves are well documented. I edited this comment, adding the second paragraph, while its reply was being posted. Sorry about that.
