Last year, an unknown person took nominal control over OpenAI's startup fund
- watersb 3y agoIt saves on healthcare costs.
- shreezus 3y agoPerhaps it’s not a “human” running the fund but rather one of the autonomous agents OAI is currently testing internally…
- SuperHeavy256 3y agoThe page refuses to load... hmm.
- publius_0xf3 3y agoSomeone--or something?
- justanotheratom 3y agoAltman Sam
- readyplayernull 3y agoAlt-man, that's a clue.
- anotherhue 3y agoCommand-man on a mac. It's all connected!
- Attummm 3y agoThe entire situation seems strangely surreal. With a name like Altman Sam, it's definitely evoking strong Hideo Kojima vibes.

- GolfPopper 3y agoBernie Madoff's ghost is currently wishing he'd thought of this 20 years ago.
- 8organicbits 3y agoWould a filing like this grant any actual control of the fund?
- knighthack 3y agoCould this "fake person" be... an AI? Hmm.
- atleastoptimal 3y agoIs all the mystery and intrigue surrounding OpenAI deliberate or just the natural consequence of a single firm holding keys to the greatest technology the world has ever seen? Crazy how casual and incidental so much of their PR seems.
- anonylizard 3y agoThey consistently undersell their product. ChatGPT was released silently, with no marketing more than a tweet. GPT-4 was just a blogpost, despite how much of a scientific leap it presented for mankind. Compare this with Google, which on the release of their inferior chatgpt, proclaims the "GEMINI ERA". Which is the typical marketing approach of exaggeration. Since OpenAI undersells, even a random tweet will be interpreted as the coming of AGI. Since Google oversells, even their impressive achivement (Gemini 1.5) gets no hype and is quickly forgotten.
- logicchains 3y ago>Since Google oversells, even their impressive achivement (Gemini 1.5) It's not that impressive given Claude 3 Opus seems to beat it by almost every metric in spite of having way less funding and a smaller team behind it.
- anon7725 3y ago> the greatest technology the world has ever seen? Give me a fucking break. Seriously, people.
- atleastoptimal 3y agocope
- eru 3y ago> [...] a single firm holding keys [...] You know that OpenAI are far from the only company training large neural networks? Eg Google and Facebook and Amazon, and countless others, are also hard at work on the matter. If you want to point a finger at a single company pulling lots of strings, pick Nvidia perhaps? They also have competitors, of course, but Nvidia is far more central than OpenAI.
- duskwuff 3y agoThe Github profile linked in the article is pretty bizarre: https://github.com/Jrbiltmore https://github.com/Jrbiltmore I took a look at some of their repos, like "QuantumOS", and the code is nonsense! Each file has some simple code (sometimes in the wrong language) vaguely related to the filename, but none of it seems like a part of a larger whole, or substantial enough to do anything. It's as if they came up with a list of filenames, then asked ChatGPT or a similar language model to write each one.
- thepablohansen 3y agoBizarre- the repos I looked at all had obvious signs of being GPT-generated. Some examples 1) https://github.com/Jrbiltmore/Quantum-Transformers/blob/root/src/theoretical_simulations.py https://github.com/Jrbiltmore/Quantum-Transformers/blob/root... - notice the ChatGPT-reminiscent "Example usage" and "Placeholder for _ implementation" which is common across the repos 2) https://github.com/Jrbiltmore/QuantumOS/blob/root/ai-framework/libraries/tensorflow_wrapper.py https://github.com/Jrbiltmore/QuantumOS/blob/root/ai-framewo... - "Example ___" and "Assume the model has _"
- __MatrixMan__ 3y agoThe number of changes that this guy can pack into a half hour is pretty impressive https://github.com/Jrbiltmore/shock-turbulence-simulation/graphs/code-frequency https://github.com/Jrbiltmore/shock-turbulence-simulation/gr...
- wisty 3y agoCan an AI sot on its own board of directors?
- tempodox 3y agoI'm sure an “AI” can sot wherever it chooses to.
- quantiq 3y ago>The Orchard is a two story affordable housing complex in Santa Ana, California. It serves the area's chronically homeless residents I think the reason for all of this is actually fairly boring. Someone with a history of mental illness and/or schizophrenia filing fraudulent documents and writing nonsense chatGPT code assuming it is some kind of AGI-singularity-oracle. It wouldn't be the first time I've seen someone with a history of mental illness assume these systems are more capable than what they actually are in reality.
- dcreater 3y agoThis is very unnerving
- sturza 3y agoIn this repo: https://github.com/Jrbiltmore/UniversalBankAndTrust https://github.com/Jrbiltmore/UniversalBankAndTrust looks like he's talking to chatgpt to generate the code. It appears someone let an AI run on the internet.
- tempodox 3y agoIf their “AI”s are so great, why don’t they control the company? And, while we’re at it, make stock investments?
